CAIRNS AFL boss Gary Young has invited other sporting codes to make the most of a new and improved Cazalys Stadium when it is completed by June next year.
The stage one development phase will start in two weeks and should be event-ready six weeks before the venue hosts the Richmond Tigers and Gold Coast Suns in Cairns’ first AFL premiership game on July 16.
But Young was thinking bigger than just the oval-balled sport.
"It would be a shame to turn away a cricket, rugby union or rugby league events if Cazalys was up to speed," Young said.
"At least in the short term; because even if we are targeting a rectangular stadium, that won’t happen in the near future."
The redesigned facility will satisfy elite sport facility requirements such as 40-person capacity change rooms, warm-up rooms, coach break-out rooms, drug testing and recovery facilities, change rooms for 20 umpires and their entourage as well as extensive communication and IT services.
The $4 million development – a joint partnership between the Federal Government and AFL Cairns – was designed by architectural group Populous, the designers of the new Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast.
