No matter what happens in the future with his football career, Tim Seymour can always look back and know he was part of history at one Aussie rules club.
The 32-year-old defender has been appointed inaugural player-coach of new AFL Cairns club, Cairns City Lions, which was formed after Redlynch Lions and Cairns City Cobras merged at the end of last year.
The Lions will be based at Holloways Beach and will also field teams in the AFL Cairns Juniors competition.
Seymour, who arrived in the Far North from Victoria in 2007, is ready for the challenge awaiting him.
"I think I’m more excited than anything else," Seymour said.
"This is my first senior coaching role and I was a bit shocked to get it to be honest. But I’ve got the respect and support of the guys at the club and that’s important."
The Cobras squad that played in the league last season will form the basis of the Lions 2011 roster, minus some notable names.
Brothers Aaron and Trent Nesbitt have returned to Victoria, while Hamish Jarrod, Jake Briggs, Patrick Bass and Jacob Stride have also left the club.
But regardless of how the Lions perform this season, Seymour is confident the club has the ingredients necessary for long-term success. The merger with Redlynch has given the Lions a junior base – something the Cobras never had the luxury of.
