THE AFL dream of Cairns' Charlie Dixon is a drop-punt closer to being fulfilled after he was named yesterday in the Gold Coast Suns' NAB Cup squad.
Dixon and fellow Far Northerner Jarrod Harbrow were included in the 28-man squad for games against the Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney at Blacktown tomorrow night.
Harbrow was originally targeting the Round 2 encounter against Carlton for a comeback after undergoing off-season shoulder surgery, but the 22-year-old was given the green light to play after surviving an intra-club hit out.
While Harbrow has already played 70 AFL games for the Western Bulldogs, the NAB Cup clash represents the biggest game of Dixon’s career.
The 20-year-old was one of the Suns’ first signings in 2008 and has done everything right to repay the recruiters’ faith in his talents.
Dixon played in the Suns’ TAC Cup and VFL sides but knows he is about to experience another level of football altogether.
“I’m expecting it will be a big step up and then the AFL will be another step up again,” Dixon said.
