The annual AFL Cairns Level 1 coaching course was held on Saturday with 45 new coaches in attendance. Coaches either undertook the junior (Auskick to U11), youth (U11 to U18) or the senior (seniors, reserves, women’s league) course preparing themselves for the season ahead.
The course is designed to be a starting point of what will hopefully be a long and rewarding journey for the coaches. The focus areas of the course were to share some meaningful practical coaching ideas, draw attention to appropriate coaching philosophy (especially in relation to juniors), highlight the importance of accepting and adhering to coaches codes of conduct, and focusing your coaching and communication on the things that really matter.
Much of the course is now practical and involves participation in on-ground activities. In trying hot conditions the coaches enthusiasm did not wane and AFL Cairns would like to thank the coaches for their attendance, efforts, and contribution to the course.
Thank you to all the presenters as well who gave up their time to be part of the course, Richie Lyons (Community Development Manager) from AFLQ, Rick Hanlon from AFL Cape York, Sean Hunter from AFL Cairns, Kim Kotzur (Strength & Conditioning), and Tim Macktill from AFLQ.
An enjoyable day was had and we wish all the coaches all the best for the coming season.
