Cairns foursome Jermaine Wardle, Damien Dewis, Jackson Brown and Andrew Brown will head to Brisbane this Friday to embark on a week long series of trial games and training sessions with the U18 Queensland Scorpions squad as they attempt to make the final Queensland U18 team.
The four boys will join fellow Cairns products Luke Chitty, Sam Michael and Fraser Eaton who are also part of the Scorpions squad but have already relocated to the big smoke to pursue their football dreams.
Wardle, Dewis and the Browns have been selected based on their performance at the Scorpions and GC Camp in Townsville in October, their commitment and progress though the AFL Cairns Summer Development Program, their performances at the recent U18 North Queensland All Star Championships, and of course their talent.
The boys who make the final team will tackle TAC Cup teams from the elite Victorian U18 competition though April and May and then play on the national stage throughout June and July against South Australia, Victoria, Northern Territory, New South Wales and Tasmania.
There are currently 5 Cairns products on AFL lists Jarrod Harbrow, Courtney Dempsey, Charlie Dixon, Lewis Moss and Rex Liddy plus 2 others that spent part of their junior development in Cairns, Gavin Urquardt and Jamie Charman. These players have opened the path for the younger players of Cairns coming through now and hopefully they will be able to make the most of their opportunities over the next couple of years.
