Footy’s unpredictable but you don’t have to visit a dodgy psychic to foresee reigning AFL Cairns premiers Cairns Saints featuring heavily in this season’s title race. The Saints made an early statement with a convincing 12.4 (76) to 2.7 (19) victory over Port Douglas in the final of the AFL Cairns Preseason Cup at Cazalys on Saturday. Normally an expert at stopping foals in the backline, Josh Martin enjoyed his foray into Saints’ attacking 50 to boot three majors. Saints player- coach James Coatsworth said everything was going to plan ahead of this weekend’s Round 1 clash against North Cairns. “I’ve got a bit of a team made up in my head already (for round 1), but there are a few positions still up for grabs,” he said. “A couple of the new recruits still haven’t had any game time, so they’ll have to come through the reserves, and I’d say the guys who’ve been in the reserves the last couple of seasons will get a run.” “Coatsworth said Saints achieved everything he wanted them to in the preseason cup. I got to see a few of the new blokes have a run and for the other guys it was some good match fitness,” he said.
