The Under-17’s Cairns Lions team had to adjust to the cold on their trip to Melbourne, but the heat was on for the rep side in some tough tests against Victorian opposition. Their first game at the weekend was a defeat to a determined and skilful Essendon Districts Football League side at the Burnside Heights oval in western Melbourne. After a tightly contested first 15 minutes, EDFL kicked 3 unanswered goals in the dying minutes and opening a handy lead at quarter time. This trend continued as Cairns struggled to counter EDFL’s pace, hardness and precision. The EDFL eventually ran out big winners by 102 points. The Lions’ cause suffered a blow before the first bounce when Queensland Scorpions squad member Jermaine Wardle was forced to pull out with an ankle injury, while 200cm ruckman Cam Duffy suffered a shoulder injury. Damien Dewis showed he was able to perform at this level and received good support from Brandon Cole and Andrew Brown.
