The Cairns Lions will attempt to go back-to-back at the U-16 Queensland Country Championships to be held in Rockhampton, starting on Friday. The Lions shook off their bridesmaid tag last year after runner-up performances to the Cape York Crusaders in 2008 and 2009. Cairns players will get a chance to test themselves against Queensland Country’s best from Cape York, Townsville, Mackay, Capricornia, Bundaberg/Wide Bay, and Darling Downs. From these championships, the Queensland Country Kookaburra team will be named to compete at the U16 Queensland State Championships in Brisbane in late April. There is also an opportunity for the players to be added to the Gold Coast Academy squad.
