While Manunda were busy running through Port Douglas last Saturday afternoon, Lee Campbell was kicking one of his 13 majors for Centrals at Trinity Beach. It didn’t take long for news of the newcomer’s feat to reach Hawks’ headquarters though, and they have spent the week focused on how best to stop the 39-year-old ball of muscle from rolling on when the two teams meet at Cazalys tomorrow.
"We heard about how well he played and no doubt he’s a new danger for us," Manunda coach Paul Griffiths said of Campbell. "He’s just really tough and strong so he will test us at ground level."
Centrals coach Tyson Lane made no secret of his delight in securing the former Sydney Swan, and winner of nine senior premierships in Sydney.
"He’s probably the best 39-year-old running around in the country," Lane said. "He loves his footy and success seems to follow him."
Despite Campbell’s dominance, Lane said the side possessed various avenues to goal, and planned on using them against the Hawks this weekend. Michael Haynes returns from injury to the top grade after bagging eight goals in reserves last weekend, and Caine George is also back. After a number of score line blow-outs already this season, this game between two form teams promises to be more evenly matched.
"We’re at home and we’re expecting a tough game for sure. By all accounts they looked good last weekend (when they beat Cairns North by 111)," Griffiths said.
