It is great to once again see two of our original Clubs – North Cairns and South Cairns – meeting on Anzac Day. It is a match that is certainly developing in tradition stakes within the AFL Cairns competition and one we want to see continue into the future. As the only match over the Easter weekend, it will be great to see a large crowd turn out at Fretwell Park.
AFL on Anzac Day is well cemented in the history books. During many wars, Australian rules football matches have been played overseas in places like northern Africa, Vietnam and Iraq as a celebration of Australian culture and as a bonding exercise between soldiers. In 1975 the VFL/AFL first commemorated Anzac Day and the Anzac Spirit with a match of Australian rules football between Essendon and Carlton in a one-off match in from of a large crowd of 77,770 at VFL Park, Waverley with Essendon coming out winners.
