Gold Coast key forward Charlie Dixon never listened to the naysayers who declared the AFL’s newest franchise were doomed to endure a winless 2011.
And after the Suns’ first AFL victory – against Port Adelaide on Saturday – Dixon feels the club have proven they deserve to be taken seriously. Speaking a day after the Suns’ thrilling come-from-behind win at AAMI Stadium, Dixon was still buzzing from the result.
"It was just unreal," Dixon said. "We stuck to our structures and kept coming at them.”We kicked the last goal of the third quarter and had a bit of momentum going into the last. "There might have been a bit of doubt (that we could catch them), but we never gave up and we got them."
The 20-year-old from Cairns made a telling contribution to the Suns’ 15-14 (104) to 15-11 (101) triumph. Showcasing the potential that led the Suns to make him their first signing, Dixon booted two goals in a remarkable final term that saw his side overcome a 28-point deficit at three-quarter time.
"I would’ve liked to have strung my form out for the whole four quarters and not just the second half," Dixon said. "It felt good to kick those couple of goals and contribute something, but you have to look at where it came from.”I thought our midfield was outstanding."
