They may be pretty in pink this weekend, but South Cairns is prepared to play ugly to get past AFL Cairns front-runners Cairns Saints at Fretwell Park tomorrow. The Cutters will leave the traditional strip at home and wear pink jerseys in an effort to raise money for breast cancer sufferers in the Mother’s Day weekend clash.
Player-coach Chris Adams said it would be business as usual, despite the change in colours. But after watching Centrals Trinity test the Saints last weekend, he may have picked up a few pointers on how to upset the heavy favourites.
"They got close and I guess it came down to the old adage; they can’t score if you’ve got the ball," he said. "Maybe you need to play that sort of scrappy, possession footy if you want the result against them."
The Cutters have started the season with a 2-2 win record. But they will be missing six players from the team that cruised past North Cairns last weekend. Skipper Mick Markham, Bill English, Matt Werner, Ryan Etherington, Corey Dupuy and Shaun Weidner will all miss the clash but Adams said it would only provide an opportunity for others to step up.
"It’s going to test our depth but that’s how you have to look at it," he said.
