AFL Cairns’ Round 7 this weekend has been dedicated “Thanks Ump” Round, which supports the key messages of the AFL’s Umpiring is Everyone’s Business Campaign and the AFL Green Shirt Umpire Program.
Following the launch of the AFL’s Umpiring is Everyone’s Business Campaign and the “Thanks Ump” Round in 2010, anecdotal evidence from across Australia is suggesting that the match day environment for umpires at community football is improving.
As our game continues to grow in the region, so too do the number of umpiring appointments needing to be filled each week. However, in the same time the number of umpires available to fill appointment has not increased at the same rate. Nationally, the number of appointments required has grown by 89% while the number of umpires has only grown by 13%.
At all Round 7 AFL Cairns matches this weekend, before each match players, coaches and support staff will line up and shake hands with the umpires prior to the coin toss.
