Port Douglas Crocs coach Andy Viola says there is plenty of room for improvement despite his side's 79-point demolition of the South Cairns Cutters on Saturday. The Crocs never got out of second gear at Fretwell Park, cruising to an emphatic victory, led by seven goals from forward Sam Boxall. But despite the big margin, Viola said his players could, and should have buried the Cutters by more.
"It’s frustrating seem at times to be going through the motions instead of playing to capacity," he said. "We lapsed in concentration a number of times. We haven’t really got the killer instinct to put the boots in, so to speak, and finish a side off."
The Crocs kicked seven goals in the first quarter, establishing a 39-point break at half-time, but Viola was nagged about a number of areas in the midfield. "The Cutters were good at the stoppages, they actually beat us at the centre clearances," he said.
"There were a couple of our key performance indicators that we fell down in. "Our backline was probably our strength for the day, they repelled pretty well, but a few of the on-ballers were a bit lazy, playing one way footy."
Viola commended the work of newcomer David Kruze, along with the efforts of forwards Daniel Smith and Boxall, who combined for 12 goals.
"A few of the old stagers were very good too, Bradley Copper and Evan Hocking led from the front," Viola said.
But Viola said the best was yet to come.
"The pleasing thing is we’re getting results like this when the room for improvement is massive," he said. "I’m happy with where we’re at.
