The enjoyment of tomorrow morning's The Cairns Post Run for Cairns on the Esplanade will linger long after the last runner has crossed the finish line. With money raised from the fun run going towards a new playground and recreational learning centre in the children’s ward at Cairns Base Hospital, the benefits of the 5km dash will be long lasting.
Leo O’Rourke and Zac Franz, both aged 15, will be among the hundreds of runners and walkers who will gather at the Lagoon for the firing of the starting gun at 7.30am. And yesterday, the teenagers were at the children’s ward, where they met some of the patients who would benefit from the money raised.
"We’re doing the fun run to support the kids," Zac said.
It will cost about $1 million to extend the hospital’s roof-top playground into a recreation and learning facility, which will include a classroom, stage and therapeutic play equipment. The playground was last upgraded 12 years ago and Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation fundraising manager Glenys Duncombe said it was due for an overhaul.
"It will give somewhere for parents to sit and get their thoughts together as well, which is absolutely essential for them," she said.
