The Cairns Lions will leave for Mackay tomorrow, gunning for a seventh straight championship in the under-14 Queensland Country Championships. A strong 23-player team has been selected for the Queen’s Birthday weekend action, trimmed down from what was an initial 50 player squad six weeks ago.
In a testament to the AFL talent pool in Cairns, a number of quality players have missed out due to the depth of the squad. The Lions will go into the two-day tournament full of confidence after past success, but will be expecting strong challenges from rival regions including Cape York, Townsville, Mackay and Capricornia.
The under-14 Queensland Country Kookaburra team will be picked from the event to compete in the state championships in late June in Brisbane, where the opportunity to be added to the Gold Coast Suns Academy Squad will be up for grabs.
Meanwhile, the Peninsula team settled for runners up in the country pool after their shaky start to the under-15 Schoolboy State Championships tournament last weekend in Townsville. Six Peninsula players – Mitch Koch, James Farley-Smith, Stan Gaudion, James Bourke, Jak Williams and Rhys Bridge – were rewarded for their efforts in the country pool games with selection in the Queensland Country team.
