They had to rely on some mathematics going their way, but the Under-14 Cairns Lions collected their seventh straight Queensland Country Championships in Mackay last weekend.
A shock first-day loss to Capricornia gave the underdogs prime position to end the Lions’ reign, but their loss to Townsville on the final day meant the championship was decided on percentages. It fell in Cairns’ favour and seven players were rewarded with Queensland Country Kookaburra selection.
Jack Bowes (Cairns Saints), Joel Karwan (Cairns Saints), Dusten Braico (Cairns City Lions), Tolowah Savage (Cairns Hawks), Heath Molloy (North Cairns Tigers), Cuan Fraser (Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs) and Jack Keygan (Cairns City Lions) will all contest the State Championships on the Gold Coast this weekend.
