Saints Legends turned back the clock at Griffiths Park on Saturday to run all over the more-fancied Cairns Brewers Masters in the first of what will be many clashes between the sides. A variety of body-types ran through the guard of honour made by the Saints seniors and amazingly every player on both teams finished the game without serious injury.
The Brewers kicked their first and only goal in the first quarter before the Legends got back to the days of old. “It took about 15 minutes and the memories of the glory days returned and we were back,” Stephen Turner said. “We thought we were in trouble at quarter time but from then on we were running in packs of three and four and really took over.”
They cantered home to the delight of a huge crowd of both Saints and Brewers supporters, creating a margin big enough to allow some fun.
“In the last five minutes a few boys tried drop kicking their goals,” Turner said. “Although a few blokes were unintentionally drop punting it earlier in the game too.”
