The countdown to the first AFL premiership fixture game in Cairns is well and truly under way with Richmond Tigers speedster Matthew White the first player to hit town yesterday. White chatted to Tigers fans and had a kick and catch session on the Esplanade with youngsters who couldn’t hide their excitement for the clash with the Gold Coast Suns on July 16.
“There are a lot of kids here looking forward to the game and, as a team, we’re looking forward to the game and getting out of Melbourne,” he said.
White is hoping the Tigers, who will play an AFL fixture game here for each of the next three years, can build their presence in the Far North.
“It’s the start of something big I’d like to think,” he said.
