Richmond midfielder Nathan Foley hopes his club enlists a few more recruits into the already well-manned Tiger army after their AFL match against the Gold Coast at Cazalys on Saturday. The Tigers are one of the best-supported AFL clubs in the country and boast a membership base of nearly 48,000.
That’s enough people to fill Cazalys four times over, but Foley said the Tigers wanted to win over Cairns supporters during their visit.
"We’re an up-and-coming team and the people who follow us would’ve seen this year we’ve shown a lot of improvement," he said. "So we want to reach out to as many people as possible and get more and more supporters. We’re trying to build a lot of success at Richmond and we want people to come on the journey with us."
Despite losing their past two games the Tigers remain a chance of playing finals football this season. But Foley, who has worn the Tigers colours more than 100 times, said the club wasn’t focused on September.
"It’s such a tight competition at the moment. There’s nothing between sixth and 10th," he said. We’ll be going out each week trying to win and if everything falls our way you never know. But finals are probably not a focus at the moment. We’re focusing on process and getting the game plan right and from that the results look after themselves."
The Tigers will start favourites for Saturday's clash against the Suns, but Foley said his team would not underestimate the AFL’s newest franchise.
"They’ve won games and most games have really challenged the opposition and played some sensational footy. They’re very dangerous," he said. "They’ve got a great balance between their senior players and their young players who have been brilliant. We’re not expecting an easy game at all."
