Finals footy is almost here and the usual suspects are clicking into gear as predicted, with Manunda, Port Douglas and Saints all notching up convincing wins on Saturday.
Saints were at their deadly best against South Cairns, continuing their rise to form in recent weeks. Port won well, too, and it sets up an enthralling battle for second spot when the two sides meet in the final round of fixtures this Saturday.
Reigning Crathern Medallist Daniel Smith was at his dominating best for the Crocs, racking up 39 possessions as they overcame an impressive effort from Centrals under the lights at Trinity Beach.
Saints are missing key forwards Reece Poyner and Matt Walsh to injury, but are still boasting a wealth of options up front and kicked 27 goals just to show they were not overly reliant on the pair.
Port Douglas coach Andy Viola was well aware of how Saints had lifted their standards in the build-up to finals, but was not worried that his troops would struggle to match them.
“We’ve known from day dot that they grow another leg at finals time, so it’s no surprise to see them doing that to teams now,” he said. “But we mean business, too, and with some great competition for spots there is going to be some tough selection decisions to be made in the next few weeks.”
He said his side had already been in September mode for the last week and expected next weekend’s high stakes clash with Saints to have the feel of a final.
“Our campaign started this week and we’re slowly getting everyone back on deck,” Viola said. “Daniel Smith was sensational on the weekend and I reckon he’ll go close to winning the medal again this year. And we’ve got good match-ups (with the top sides) all over the park, an inform ruck and out on-ballers are on par with everyone in the competition.”
