Lenny Warren could barely speak, he was still blowing that hard. His mum found him in the crush of players and gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
“Thanks Mum; bloody fantastic,” he said.
It was a well-deserved embrace, for the Hawks had just beaten red-hot favourites Saints to capture their first AFL Cairns flag since 2007. Warren was part of the team that won in 2006 too, but this time he was captain and had played a major part in the success.
“The bunch of boys we’ve got are fantastic, it doesn’t get much better than this – another premiership, just fantastic,” he said.
He, like every other Hawk on Saturday at Cazalys, had done the work required to stunt the Saints midfield and starve their forward line of any opportunity to kick goals. The skipper said he had no doubt his boys could rebound from their 92-point humiliation a fortnight ago.
“If we kept it in tight and stopped them from running we were going to beat them,” he said.
