North Cairns fended off a gallant Manunda Hawks to continue their unbeaten start to the AFL Cairns Women’s League competition on Saturday. The Tigers clung on to a one-goal victory in a low-scoring stoush between last season’s grand finalists at Holloways Beach.
Tigers Jo Butland was pleased to take the points, but admitted it would take time to adjust to major personnel changes from last year’s premiership-winning side.
“We always knew it would be a hard slog and it’s good to come away with the points,” she said.
Butland praised the core group of remaining players from last year – Felina Goodman, Maneka San and Staci Trindle-Price – who worked hard in the Tigers midfield.
For the Hawks, Trina White was at her ever-reliable best, leading her side to a late charge that took them within a solitary kick late in the game. While the Hawks again pose a serious threat to the Tigers title defence, Butland conceded next week’s assignment against a red-hot Central Trinity Bulldogs side would shed more light on who their nearest rival would be.
