It was a case of slip, slop, slap for students at Edge Hill State School yesterday, as AFL Cairns and the Cancer Council joined forces to promote Queensland SunSmart Day. Officially celebrated across the state today, the Cancer Council Queensland initiative aims to promote sun safe activity in the schoolyard or workplace.
“Skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer,” Cancer Council Queensland fundraising co-ordinator Lynsie James said. “So the younger you start really drilling the message home to kids, the better to prevent that risk of skin cancer when they’re older.”
Hundreds of students descended on the school’s main oval yesterday to hear the importance of wearing sunscreen and a hat from Cancer Council mascot Sid Seagull.
AFL Cairns development officers were also on hand to organise a number of lunchtime football activities afterwards, with development manager Eddie Skiba driving home the sun safe message.
