Manunda Hawks assistant coach Fiona Sharp believes an early wake-up call can be reversed when her side clash with Centrals Trinity Bulldogs today at Holloways Beach.
The Hawks were rolled in the opening round by 13 points by the Bulldogs and Sharp labelled it a “shock”. “We weren’t expecting to lose, it was a bit of a shock,” she said.
Despite the loss, she said her side would benefit from the learning experience of the round one defeat.
“They (Bulldogs) are always very tough and if you get a bit complacent like we did in round one, they will punish you,” she said. “We definitely learned that we can’t take them easy.”
Bulldogs gun forward Kat Fatnowna was absent when the team were drubbed by reigning premiers North Cairns Tigers last week – but she returns today.
Sharp said the Hawks would have a “special plan” to avoid another four goal match-winning haul similar to her performance in round one. Sharp said the side would look for a strong showing from skipper Kareena White and Chantelel O’Neill, a rugby player who has emerged as one of the finds of the season at the Hawks.
