Manunda Hawks coach Aaron McKinnon says his side will run the gauntlet to give themselves the best chance to upset reigning premiers North Cairns Tigers today. McKinnon has identified the tactic of playing down the middle of Watson’s Oval as the best ploy to defeat the benchmark of the AFL Cairns Women’s League.
But he is also mindful that his blueprint will only work with precise kicking, otherwise Tigers leader Jo Butland, who marshalls the middle of the ground, will be influential on the counter.
"We’re going to concentrate on going straight down the corridor, but we need to eliminate spraying it when we do that," he said. "We can’t afford to kick it straight to Jo Butland; she’s a very good footballer and has a huge kick on her which can really hurt us."
Back in round two, the Hawks fell one goal short of causing a boilover against the Tigers. And looking back at that lost opportunity, McKinnon believes silky disposal could turn around that result.
