South Cairns Cutters now have every team in the AFL Cairns Women's League looking over their shoulder. Despite a slow start to the season where they were struggling to field a team, the Cutters have re-grouped and last week won their first game of the season against Trinity Beach Bulldogs.
This afternoon they take on the Manunda Hawks and captain Karina White said they now posed a huge threat to everyone in the competition.
‘‘They’ll be tough because they struggled at the start, but now they have heaps of numbers and a new coach,’’ White said. ‘‘It’s a big match for us. We made the final last year, so everyone thought it would be us and Norths at the top this year, but apart from Norths the other three teams are really even.”
Hawks have their own concerns and will be searching for redemption after suffering a demoralising 53-point loss to Norths last week.
‘‘They were just a lot better than us and we had about five regular players missing, although that’s no excuse, but they were just too good,’’ White said. ‘‘But we’re coming along well. We’ve got a few new girls in the team this season, a couple who have come over from Norths who didn’t get to play much last year so they’re loving it over here.’’
Souths’ main protagonists will be regular faces Laura Martin and Ash Singleton, although the team has also benefited from the addition of speedy midfielder Rubi Leete, who made the move south this season.
‘‘She went to Cutters this year just to help them out and she’s been great for them,’’ White said.
