It wasn’t quite the demolition job of previous weeks but North Cairns go into the Christmas break completely entrenched atop the AFL Cairns Women’s League ladder after victory against South Cairns on Saturday.
The Manunda-based outfit scored a 6.8(44) to 1.4(10) victory to maintain their unbeaten run and will go into the three-week layoff buoyant with confidence. They did not have it all their own way, though, with Souths putting up a strong fight, particularly in the second quarter, according to Norths’ Jo Butland.
“Souths gave it to us, especially in the second quarter, but probably out experience got us there in the end,” Butland said. “Everyone played a very important role yesterday. It was a good win because we had a lot of people away again so we had a lot of the newer girls and two first-gamers and a couple who hadn’t played many games.”
Tarin Moke and Vivian Pearson booted two goals each, while netball player Leanna Hosking crossed codes and kicked a goal in her first game. Norths ran riot in the opening quarter to have three unanswered goals on the board, before Souths reeled them in with a very evenly matched second quarter. The Tigers added a further two majors in the third term with no further dents made on the scoreboard in the last quarter.
