Trinity Beach Bulldogs have been forced to forfeit their AFL Women’s League clash with Manunda Hawks today after a tidal wave of injuries hit the club. Bulldogs’ training has begun to resemble a hospital emergency ward, with the list including – but not limited to – three broken arms, two broken fingers, a fractured cheekbone, two concussions, two ligament tears and a near-fractured vertebrae. President Kristen Lawless has never seen anything like it at the club.
“I broke my arm in the second game and then girls broke their arms every two weeks after that,” Lawless said. “So maybe it’s a good thing we’re not playing this weekend because we’re due for another broken arm.”
Among those in arm casts Queensland representative and captain Lauretta Dowling. The club had been forced to rely on young, less experienced players.
“They’ve been doing really well; they’ve been amazing and the guts in them is incredible,” Lawless said. “Last week we had the bare minimum and we had to call in a few favours to girls who aren’t even playing this season.”
