Manunda Hawks will limp into tonight’s women’s Cairns AFL grand final replay at Watsons Oval after losing influential playmaker Tiana “Doc” Ernest over the holiday break. Ernest, a doctor, transferred from Cairns on New Year’s Day, adding to an exodus of Hawks players this season.
“I think we’ve lost about eight girls from last year’s grand final team, so it has been very tough,” coach Fiona Sharp said yesterday.
Hawks will field a side, but will be without a substitute player for tonight’s game. That is not a good sign coming up against a supremely confident Tigers team.
“We’re just trying to be competitive,” Sharp said. “Everyone will struggle for numbers after the Christmas break but (Tigers) will want to keep their record going and their form up.”
