South Cairns Cutters stunned the Cairns AFL women's competition on Saturday night in a shock 5.3 (33)- 5.3 (33) draw against the unbeaten North Cairns Tigers. Forward Ashleigh Southern booted four crucial goals, as the ruthless Cutters defence stifled the Tigers at Holloways Sports Complex.
"I couldn’t have been prouder of the girls," coach Rob Lemmey said.
When the final whistle blew, it was met by scenes of jubilation from the Cutters players.
"It was like they had won the grand final, they were that happy," Lemmey said.
Tigers coach Brett Potter said the Cutters team should not have been too surprised with the result.
"They’ve got a good side – I think they can push us all the way in the finals," Potter said.
He had been warning his team about the upcoming Cutters battle for weeks.
"Since (Lemmey) came on board, they have been improving every week and you can see it in their structure and their discipline," he said.
While Tigers still remain undefeated in the premiership, Potter said his players were treating yesterday’s result as a loss.
"Obviously, they are very disappointed," Potter said. "The girls now realise that they’re not unbeatable and it’s good that it’s happening now, and not in the finals series. We need to get to training and work on a few drills."
