The proof is there for all to see and couldn’t be closer to home for Tom Michael. The Cairns Hawks junior is the younger brother of Sam, who was picked up by the Brisbane Lions in the rookie draft last December.
It proved to the 15-year-old that it was possible to achieve what some would think just plain impossible. And now he’s doing his best to replicate his big brother by training with the Cairns’ contingent of the Gold Coast Suns Academy.
“Sam’s doing really well down there,” Tom said of his brother, “and it was just great for me to see that it’s achievable and to see the amount of training and hard work he’s doing.”
Gold Coast academy manager Andrew Johnston and AFL Queensland state talent manager Bob Batty visited the Cairns squad on Thursday. The pair are hoping to continue the rise of state talent into the AFL.
“We aim to get 10 Queenslanders on an AFL list each season and this year we had five drafted and five rookie-listed,” Batty said.
