It’s a testament to the coolness of his character that Peter Yagmoor hasn't felt intimidated since arriving at Collingwood four months ago. The 18-year-old from Cairns was selected in the AFL preseason draft by the Magpies and has quickly settled into life in Melbourne. That’s an achievement in itself. It would be easy for Yagmoor’s head to spin if he thought too much about what he was walking into.
With more than 70,000 members, an AFL legend as coach and a roster of stars, including the current Brownlow medallist, the magnitude of the Magpies establishment could easily overawe a kid from Far North Queensland. But not Yagmoor, who moved to Brisbane in 2008 to attend high school and play for Morningside in the QAFL.
"It’s an awesome feeling (being at Collingwood)," Yagmoor said. "It’s obviously every kid’s dream to play in the AFL, and I hope to be running on the "G" or Etihad Stadium kicking the footy for Collingwood soon. I’m really keen to push myself this year and see what I can do."
Yagmoor has set himself a goal of playing three AFL games this season but accepts he will spend most the year learning his trade in the VFL. While coach Nathan Buckley hasn’t outlined plans for him yet, Yagmoor will accept whatever role he is given if it means cracking the big time.
"He’s very approachable. Bucks loves to have a chat and has great communication," Yagmoor said. "All the coaching staff are approachable. The guys like Robert Harvey, Ben Hart and Matthew Lappin are all ex-players, which is really good for a player
like me, who is just starting out.”
