They say past performances are an indicator of future efforts. But Manunda Hawks coach Fiona Sharp is hoping that is not the case when her side goes up against the North Cairns Tigers in the AFL Cairns women’s major semi-final at Watsons Oval today.
The Hawks came up against the undefeated Tigers five times in the regular season and, like everyone else, they were on the wrong end of the scoreboard. But it was the way the Hawks lost the games that made it most worrying. In the five encounters, the Tigers outscored Manunda 252-52.
The closest the Hawks came was a 3.2 (20) to 2.2 (14) defeat in the second round of the season. Manunda’s worst performance came in their next clash with the Tigers, losing 0.1 (1) to 8.6 (54) in round five. Sharp said her team had this week reviewed game tapes against the Tigers to see where they went wrong.
“We haven’t marked up well and we’ve coughed up the ball,” she said. “If we can work on our disposals and stop giving them the ball, I think we can beat them.”
Sharp conceded it would take their best effort of the season to defeat the reigning premiers.
“We can’t slacken off for a quarter or even five minutes, because they’ll put us away,” she said.
In the other game, Centrals Trinity Beach take on South Cairns Cutters in a do-or-die elimination final. The loser will be sent home, the winner will play the loser of the Manunda-North Cairns clash.
