Saints showed they would again be a force in the AFL Cairns premiership race, streaking clear of an improved South Cairns to comfortably take the Preseason Cup at Cazalys on Saturday. Despite an early challenge from the Cutters, Saints took the spoils 11.12 (78) to 3.3 (21) to prove they would be hard to stop after losing to Manunda in the premiership decider last season.
The new-look Saints, led by hulking player-coach Nick Braybon, had free run of the midfield and when they entered the forward line more often than not Matt Walsh was there to either pot a goal or set up one. There was only one goal in it at quarter time, but with the wind at their backs in the second, Saints were able to build a healthy lead and consign the Cutters to a solitary behind to take a decisive lead into the main break. With ex-Adelaide Crow Nick Gill still to come in, it leaves Saints boasting many options up front to complement their robust midfield.
In other practice games, Rex Liddy made his return to AFL Cairns, as his Tigers narrowly beat Manunda Hawks. Port Douglas snuck past Centrals at Trinity Beach in another close one.
