There will be one less character running around in the AFL Cairns competition after news that Centrals Trinity recruit Chris Adams will not play this season.
Last year’s player-coach at South Cairns had signed with the club as an assistant coach and player, leading out the blue and red during the Preseason Cup.
But the often-controversial midfielder told The Cairns Post yesterday that personal reasons had forced him to give the game a break.
“You’ve gotta be happy in life, and if you’re not then you get out of there,” he said.
“Heading across to Centrals seemed like the most viable decision at the time, but it was probably the wrong one in hindsight.’’
Adams endured plenty of flak from the sideline during his season with the Cutters, and copped it from his former club when the Bulldogs played them in the Preseason Cup.
But his starring role for Cairns in their upset over Sydney in last year’s representative match left no doubt of his ability, something Centrals president Graeme Reeves was well aware of.
“It leaves us a quality player short,” he said. “But we’re quietly confident we’ll still be competitive again.”
It leaves fledgling player-coach Matt Cunningham in full control of the senior squad, but Reeves is confident his young shoulders can carry the burden.
“He’s doing some good things, and the guys are responding to him well,” Reeves said. “He was a bit sore, so didn’t play much preseason, but that gave him a chance to see things from the sidelines and get a better insight.”
