A sheet of glass is all that separates breakfast radio announcers Nick Gill and Billy Bentley during working hours, but that will be removed when the two lock horns at Holloways Beach tomorrow.Bentley, a Cairns City Lions recruit, can be heard on Sea FM, while Cairns Saints’ prized pick-up Gill plies his trade with Hot FM.
The banter has been flowing freely for weeks, ahead of their AFL Cairns round four clash at Cairns City’s northern beaches home base.
"He’ll drop a quick sledge just before I go back on air and I have to keep my composure," Gill said. And his counterpart joked that more drastic measures may be in the
pipeline. "There’s boobytraps; if I can push him down the stairs before Sunday, everyone (at the Lions) will be happy," Bentley said. "If Nick Gill goes missing, we don’t know anything."
This game, as a sporting contest, would have been a non-event last season, but this year the Lions have shown plenty of promise. And with a few new arrivals mid-week from Darwin, they could just make the Saints sweat. The Lions remain winless after two close losses this season, while Saints have won their three games convincingly to take the early premiership favourite tag.
"It’s definitely a David v Goliath battle, but we’ll be giving it a good crack," Bentley said. "Roey’s (coach Jason Roe) been instrumental in his coaching; brought a different attitude to the group. It’s a good bunch of blokes that want to play footy and win."
Gill acknowledged that the pressure was on them to get the result, and he said it would be nice to get one over Roe, who was on the coaching staff at Adelaide Crows when he played.
"He’s sent me a few texts this week just stirring the pot, it feels like I’m a lone soldier here and everyone is out to get me," he laughed.
