A big Anzac Day crowd should welcome Brendan Tennick's Tigers on to Watsons Oval today and he expects the team to go to another level as a result. The North Cairns skipper, who has been one of the side’s best this season, said his men relished the annual Anzac Day clash with South Cairns and that there was no reason they should not continue to build on their promising form.
"We’re close to full strength and the dry ground should really help us play some good footy," he said. "I’m pretty excited – I always enjoy playing on Anzac Day. We always get a pretty decent crowd and running out in front of them is something we all enjoy."
The Tigers will start favourites, especially considering Souths’ short turnaround from Saturday’s win at Fretwell Park. But their dominant performance against the Bulldogs, in which forward Glen Gascoyne kicked eight goals and midfielder Daniel Fry excelled, means it won’t be easy for the Tigers.
"I haven’t seen much of them play, but I know Glen is a bit of a handful and a bit unorthodox up front, and they obviously played well last weekend," Tennick said. "We beat them in a fairly tight one last year and we never like losing at Watsons Oval."
Defender Adam Mueller will be missing from the Tigers team, but Tennick said the return of Leigh Jorgensen and Josh Marriot would help alleviate that. And he said playing coach Kane Richter should be running freely after some niggles had held him back early in the season.
"You can see he’s just enjoying getting touches again after 18 months on the sidelines," Tennick said.
