Kane Richter has warned that his team will only get better - and so will star player Rex Liddy.Liddy was instrumental early in North Cairns 118-point drubbing of South Cairns in the Anzac Day match at Watsons Oval yesterday afternoon.
But the former Gold Coast Suns player's dominance tapered off after a first quarter in which he helped the Tigers rush to a 42-point lead.
"Rex is improving, we just need to get him match fit and continue working hard with the boys," Richter said. "But the good thing was he showed some improvement out there."
The same could be said for the North Cairns team as a whole.
South Cairns actually started the game well, getting an early two-goal lead. But that's where the good times ended for Grant Russell's team.
With Liddy spearheading the attack the Tigers fought back to stage a 9.2 (56) to 2.2 (14) lead by quarter-time. By halftime, that lead expanded 67 points. The Tigers could have coasted from there and still won, but they came out with a point to prove in the second half and finished the game 26.16 (172) to 8.6 (54).
"We spoke about the significance of the day (before the game) but more importantly we had to stamp our authority and play the way we wanted to play," Richter said. "The last couple of weeks we've been putting good efforts in for patches of the game whereas we need to put a whole 120 minutes of effort in. Today was really pleasing in that we put four quarters of footy in … we played some good footy."
The win could be the catalyst for bigger things.
"We've got heaps of improvement in us," he said. "We haven't got our best side on the park just yet … and some guys are still learning to play with each other."
Russell had just one word to describe his side's performance: terrible.
"The important is … we have two guys over 23 out there, so even though we got beat the kids are learning every time they get minutes on the field," he said.
