It was billed as a grand final replay but the result indicated that one of these two teams will not be around when the whips are cracking come finals time this year.
To the casual observer, Cairns Saints’ 90-point thrashing of Manunda on Saturday would suggest the 2011 runners-up are the favourites to go one better this season. But Saints co-coach Nick Braybon was having none of it, suggesting his charges were still off their game and had a lot of improvement left in them.
‘‘We were probably 10 per cent of what we are capable of,’’ he said. ‘‘The Hawks asserted themselves well in the opening quarter and we weren’t hard enough in contesting the football early on.’’
The quarter-time address must have been a corker as the Saints responded by booting eight goals in the second stanza.
