The Country Stockmen put on a clinic at Cazalys against Cairns yesterday afternoon to record another big victory against the Far Northerners in the Queensland Country Selection derby. The best players from around regional Queensland made up the Country side and their execution, ball usage and cohesion suggested that selectors had got it right. Not a set shot at goal was missed - many were lined up from the pockets 50m out - as the visitors ran away winners 22.12(144) to 11.10(76). It continued the Stockmen's dominance after a 50-point win in their last encounter two years ago. Cairns were always within a few kicks of the lead until the final quarter and looked like mounting a comeback when vice-captain Dan Lock booted back-to-back goals mid-way through the third term. The second of those, booted from 60m out, brought the margin to 14 points and the appreciative crowd to life. But those same supporters were no sooner crying foul when a cruel penalty went against North Cairns Dwayne Bosen for exceeding 15m without a bounce. The Stockmen goaled from the turnover and whatever steam was left in the hosts quickly vanished. While disappointed with the blow out - there was only four goals in it at three-quarter time - Cairns' coach Andy Viola was keeping things in perspective. "We're playing the rest of Queensland," he said. "I think the result shows the league in Cairns is alive and kicking, they were just a very polished unit, very clean and very good at converting their chances. "We've just got to get a bit better." Skipper Matt Walsh was starved of opportunities up front but he Dan Lewis and Nick Gill still caused the Stockmen's defence to work overtime. In the midfield Brenton Powell was solid, while veteran Billy English was labelled best on ground by Viola. Brothers Rohan and Adam Couch were also impressive. A Queensland Country team, to contest the national titles will be announced today.
