AFL Cairns president Gary Young is determined to ensure Richmond's pre-season visit is not a one off as he helps to establish the region's reputation as an elite sport training base. Young said the was "highly optimistic" of other teams, from AFL and other sports, using the Far North as a specific heat training destination.
"With the Rio Games ahead, and as heat training comes to the fore, this experience will show Cairns is a great destination for just that," he said. He confirmed that the liklihood of another AFL team playing games in Cairns, when the Tigers' three-year association expires after this season, was high. "We'll be working hard with the AFL and State Government and other teams to get that commitment to come up here, because it's been terrific and a worthwhile experience for all parties involved."
The Tigers took to the beach last Saturday morning for an exhausting morning outrigging session with Yorkeys Knob club Hekili. The activity was part of a team-building, fitness-based journey from Gordonvale to the Daintree. Once completed, the players will have a few days to themselves at Port Douglas.
