Players have come from as far as London to compete in the annual AFL Cairns Masters tournament at Cazalys on Saturday on the guarantee of two things - a few stories being retold after the game and some sore bodies on Sunday.
Six over-33s teams and two over-45s teams will take to the turf, with Cairns Saints and two Cairns teams tackling squads from Capricornia, Gove and Townsville. Saints will have last-minute fly-ins from all over the world, while the likes of former Crathern Medalist Tyson Lane will suit up for Cairns. Gove and Capricornia have dominated the past two tournaments, but under coach Max O'Halloran Cairns Saints are quietly confident of springing an upset.
Cairns Saints' Stephen Turner said it would be about balancing the fun with their embedded competitive streak. "It's going to be a good day, regardless. We've got a bloke flying in from London and then you've got some very handy players still running around," he said. "It will be interesting to see how the body pulls up." Round-robin games begin at 1pm, with the grand final at 6.50pm at Cazalys on Saturday.
