New Centrals Trinity coach Peter Seymour admits luring former AFL star Brendon Fevola for a guest stint at the Bulldogs this season was unlikely but that it was something the club would consider to promote themselves and AFL Cairns.
Seymour has coached, played and sat on the board of Yarrawonga since 1997, the same team that Fevola helped to the Ovens and Murray premiership last season. The coach moved north in January and is intent on dragging the Bulldogs off the canvas after a disappointing season that included walkouts from players, coaches and administrators and just three wins.
Seymour said luring a player of Fevola's profile to Trinity Beach would be a promotional tool that put the club on the map across Australia but that it appeared unlikely to happen this season. "Probably not but you never know," he said. "He's best mates with (former Richmond player) Craig Ednie and we are hopeful of getting Craig up for a few games this season. "So we won't rule it out. I think we'd certainly benefit recruiting wise, because clubs around the country would know who we were."
Promotion of the league is at the forefront of Seymour's agenda, who said if more players around Australia knew what the region had to offer they would be here in a flash. He believed the sooner a NEAFL team was established in the region, the better. "So many players would be here in two minutes if it promoted itself better and that would develop the league," he said. "In the Ovens and Murray competition, you have every kid playing their arse off to get a gig in the VFL. You need something to aspire to."
