The Crocs have a perfect chance to capture the imagination of the city's sports fans by winning tonight's AFL Cairns clash with Centrals Trinity in what will be the first game under lights at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex.
The Crocs are the number one sporting outfit in Port, and president Andy Smith hoped a big crowd would be on hand to witness the historic night clash between two new-look sides. "We're always a well supported team and hopefully we can get a big turn out and get the win to boost the confidence and the morale for the season ahead," Smith said.
"Last year was disastrous in terms of injury. "If we can avoid that I think we'll be very competitive." As many as 10 Crocs have touched down in Port in the last fortnight and will run out tonight, while Centrals have a new coach in Peter Seymour and a bevy of fresh faces in toe.
While it may be unfamiliar territory for some, it will be a blast from the past for Seymour and rival coach Brad Cooper. The Bulldogs mentor, who comes with big raps from Victorian County footy, coached Cooper to a premiership years ago and was asked to join his coaching staff this season. Having already committed to Centrals, Seymour had to decline the offer and is now relishing what will be their first head coaching head to head. "We're great mates and it's going to be fun. He'll have them well drilled, that's for sure," Seymour said.
A slow start in preseason has not deterred Seymour, who said they would field a stronger team tonight and hope to upset Cooper's men. "I showed him some of my tricks, but not all of them," Seymour laughed. "But I'm just like everyone else, I just hope to get off to a good start."
