The scoreboard is irrelevant for Cairns City Lions coach Jason Roe tomorrow. All he cares about is guts and desire.
The Lions host the South Cairns Cutters at Holloways Beach and are hunting their first win of the AFL Cairns season.
While he would love to earn four competition points, Roe is realistic about what his side can achieve with six first-team regulars unavailable.
"A few of our good recruits are going to be interstate, so we're probably going to be battling a fair bit," Roe said. "Pretty much all I'm after this week is competitiveness. I just want the boys to go out and put their bodies on the line and have a real go.
"I'm not even concerned about the result this week. I'm basing our success purely on the effort we put in."
After copping a 148-point hiding from North Cairns in round 1, the Lions had chances to win their past two matches against Centrals Trinity Beach and Manunda. But despite the near misses, Roe said his side's recent perfomances weren't anything to be proud of.
"To be honest, we've played terribly the last two weeks," he said.
"We didn't deserve to win either of those games the way we played.
"It's kind of back to the drawing board for us because we're about four or five weeks away from getting our players back."
The Cutters are trying to bounce back from a 49-point loss to Saints in round 3, but Roe isn't paying any attention to Souths' form guide. He has bigger worries occupying his mind.
"We're miles away from worrying about what the opposition are doing at the moment," he said.
"We haven't won a game and have to work on being competitive ove the next month and see what happens.
"I just hope the boys give a good, honest performance on Saturday and that we can get something positive out of it because the last two weeks there haven't been a lot."
The game starts at 3pm
