The Gold Coast Suns will not take a home game to Cairns next year, but will happily provide an opposition to any Victorian club willing to call Cazalys home.
Suns boss Travis Auld said yesterday that shifting a game from Metricon Stadium to the Far North would be counter-productive as the AFL attempts to generate more fixtures played in Queensland.
"It wouldn't make sense; an interstate team needs to be the home team," he said. "That's how the arrangement works, because it's about bringing another game to Queensland."
Richmond's three-year association with Cazalys will end on Saturday. The club is not willing to renew teh deal after suffering cruical losses in both visits.
The AFL is currently working to find a replacement club, and it comes as no surprise that Auld and the Suns are hoping they do. "We love Cairns. Two games and two wins and it almost feels like a home game for us," the CEO said.
Along with players Michael Rischitelli and Jack Martin and AFL Cape York's Dwayne Bosen, the club boss will spend the next few days in Bamaga for the No Boundaries Program.
It is Auld's first time on the trip, but the fifty time Suns players have ventured north of Cairns to meet with children and push the benefits of remaining active and healthy and staying in shool.
"Each year we've come up and done more than just play the game," he said. "We like to do a lot of work, it's our obligation. It's an important program for us - it's part of our dedication to the community."
The Suns hope skipper Gary Ablett is fit for the clash on Saturday after missing the loss to Brisbane with injury.
