So often assigned the role of second fiddle, Alex Macqueen was thrust into the lead role in a best-on-ground performance for Saints on Saturday.
He is one fo the league's biggest threats in front of goal, but is constantly overshadowed by forward partner Matt Walsh, who booted an incredible 134 majors in the home and away season.
Both kicked four goals to lead the injury-ravaged Saints past Norths for the club's 11th senior premiership, but it was the performance of Macqueen that everyone was talking about.
"Walshy is such a good player and it's easy to play with him because you can just be there to pick up the scraps. There is never really many scraps to be picked up, 'cause Walshy catches everything," Macqueen said.
The forward's majors were kicked in trademark sneaky fashion, popping up to win possession and using his speed to find space and kick straight.
Used back in the midfield too, Macqueen won plenty of hard ball and didn't stop running.
"Yeah it's a dream (to play well in a grand final)," he said.
"All the boys had to stick it out with no bench, going down with cramp and nursing sore ribs.
"It's amazing, it's what you dream about."
He said watching Norths unravel helped spur them on.
"It helps when they start doing some undisciplined acts, but it was still tight at that point," he said.
"It all comes down to the team that uses the ball the best and we kept our composure whey they lost it a bit."
