It is that time of the year where what you see is not necessarily what you get.
South Cairns Cutters coach Daniel Lock scouted hs AFL Cairns opponents with an untrusting pair of eyes at Saturday's preseason cup event.
"There's always a bit of foxing this time of year," he said.
"They don't want to show their cards too early so I assume every club had a few blokes sitting in the stands."
Cutters laid their cards on the table, beating Centrals Trinity Beach 7.6 (48) to 0.6 (6) and Cairns City Lions 5.7(37) to 4.5(29).
They will meet the weekend's only other undefeated team, Cairns Saints, next Saturday at Cazalys.
Saints beat Port Douglas 8.7(55) to 3.1(19) and Manunda Hawks 4.3 (27).
In the weekend's other results North Cairns Tigers beat Centrals Trinity Beach 11.9(75) to 1.0(6) and drew 2.6(18) to 2.6(18) with Cairns City Lions.
Manunda proved too strong for Port Douglas with a 3.9 (27) to 3.5 (23) win on Saturday.
"I'm not reading too much into it," Lock said.
"It was nice to get a couple of wins but a lot will change between now and when the season starts.
