They have experience, fitness and a desire to win the contested ball, but it is South Cairns' precision kicking that sets them apart so far this season according to Manunda coach Brad Sinclair.
Sinclair's battalion of young men had another brave crack on Saturday in a 13.19 (97) to 4.2 (26) loss to the first-placed Souths.
The losing coach admitted that as many as eight posters on the day mde the scoreboard a little easier to stomach, but was still impressed with his sides efforts against the team he rates as the benchmark.
"They controlled the ball really well; they are a good kicking side and were able to hold the ball well," he said.
"We didn't help ourselves by bombing to packs where our younger guys were getting outmuscled though."
Sinclair credited youngster Elia Ware for his job on full forward Paul Smith, while debutant Jack West had two of the Hawks majors.
